Womadelaide 2016 almost upon us

Posted: February 17, 2016 in Uncategorized

Just over 3 weeks now until Womadelaide 2016 Kicks off and boy what a lineup this year. Like every year there are performers you know well and there are others you don’t know so well but you soon discover them. A real mixed bag with some big acts from the 80s and 90s such as The Violent Femmes ( who I saw back in 198? at LeRox in Light square ) and DeLaSoul who had some massive hits in the early 90s.

Then still a good smattering of what some consider the more traditional Womadelaide bands like Seun Kuti and Egypt 80, Angélique Kidjo performing with the ASO as well as Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

To  start the weekend off on Friday night there’s also one of Womads favourites, The Cat Empire  who seem to have performed there more times than I have fingers – ok maybe an exaggeration but I reckon this would be their 4th time in the last 12 or so years. Hopefully someone will look it up and correct me.

St Germain play Sunday night and although I hadn’t heard much of them 4 months ago, a friend of mine was hugely excited when they announced them playing also, so Ive checked out some of their albums and will definitely be watching them. I cant believe I hadnt heard much of their stuff previously.

My list thus far is only touching the surface, there is so much more talent on show this year it’s going to be tough to consume it all in the 4 days. Over the next few weeks I will look indepth at a few more of the performers you can catch at Womadelaide.

For those who want to relive some memories from 2015 Womadelaide you can check out a compilation of Video snippets. It might also give those who havent attended before and thinking about going a taste of the diversity to be found at Womadelaide. There is always something for everyone. you hadn’t heard of St Germain? Don’t miss him! Boy, was I relieved when they announced it as he’s playing Melbourne and Sydney, a perfect fit for Womad. Saw him in Melbourne when he first toured,
15 years ago! Back then he had half a doz superb French African muso’s in the band. This time I assume he’ll have Malian musos as featured on his latest album.

I am surprised as well. Been having a St Germain feast the last few weeks going through all their stuff on youtube – Clips and live performances. Definitely a performance to schedule in.

Womad rule of thumb: ignore the big names, be adventurous, go for the bands you’ve never heard of before, there are always surprises in store. Search out the small stages for more intimate musical experiences, get up front as close as you can.
Here’s a hot tip, track down when these dudes play, Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro

Totally agree Ian. I’m going through the other acts I havent heard of and looking up performances and Clips to get an idea on what they are about. Always happy to get some hot tips on little known gems
