Ive been asking friends who they are looking forward to see at Womadelaide. For many people the answer is Monday nights main stage performance by The Specials. They came to Adelaide for the first time in 2012, so they must have enjoyed the experience.  If you love Ska and have your dancing shoes on make sure you catch them.

Here is some snippets from their Thebarton theatre show in 2012

The Video for the 2015 Adelaide Zombie walk has finally been released. It took a lot longer than I had expected so apologies first up for the delay. Shot on a Panasonic GH4 with a 12-35mm F/2.8 lens. Edited on Premiere Cs6 with accompanying music “Zombie Barbie” by Levitika used with permission. Levitika also performed at the after show party so I incorporated footage from the performance into the event footage

The weather didn’t cool down on Sunday so we delayed getting down to Botanic park by a few hours arriving just after 2pm.

Caught part of Mia Dysons set on the Stage 3 then headed off to Stage 1 to watch

Alim Qasimov Ensemble which was much more listening music than dancing which is a good thing in the middle of the day with full sun and 35 degree + heat.
Then off to Stage 3 again to watch the start of the set by Psarantonis which was also quite a laid back performance. I couldn’t stay for the whole set as it clashed with another band that was only doing a single performance so off to the Moreton bay stage for Golonka. This grassy area in front of this stage was popular and quite shaded.
Soweto Gospel Choir then took to Stage 1 in the most colourful atire of any of the weekend performers with great singing voices. I stayed for the whole set at the end trying to decide whether to catch Novalima or The Correspondants. Most of the photographers were going to the Correspondants even though it was just 2 guys on stage. I decided I would try and fit in both !!
Novalima first up and their sound was great but the photo ops were limited but a quite cluttered stage so after a few songs I fast walked to Stage 2 and managed to get into the pit area for only about 1 minute before being kicked out ( 3 song rule ). I wish I had been there for the start as photographically the lead singer of the Correspondants was full of movement and excitement. He must have been REALLY hot doing all the dancing he did with the full force of the sun bearing down on him which you get on stage 2 late afternoon.
Back to stage 1 then for Salif Keita whom I have seen at previous Womadelaide evens and he doesn’t disappoint. Next on to Tim Rogers and the Bamboos on Stage 2 with both Tim and the Bamboos being well respected as separate performers but together they worked really well. A definite chemistry at work.
Finally another performer that has been at Womad previously – Jimmy Cliff. I’d like to have the energy and enthusiasm that he does at his age as he twirled around the stage kicking his legs up. There were some things he performed that I didnt like such as his “partidge family” song that he told us was screened as a superbowl commercial and had so many million hits << I didnt care…. I want to hear his songs. The whole family was pretty tired so didn’t stay for the encore which I was told was pretty awesome but we heard quite a bit as we walked back to the car to end Day 3

What I really love about Womadelaide is experiencing and being exposed to Music and dance that I otherwise would never have even heard of or seen and this year is no exception.

Midfestival is no time for a full writeup but here is a list of some of the acts Ive so far enjoyed seeing

From Fridays sessions

  • The Alaev Family
  • Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni Ba
I didnt have a chance to stay and see the Cat empire although reports from others said it was a great show they put on.
Saturday – we got there early before the first band even started
An early highlight was

  • Mari Boine who originates from Norway – what a voice. Some really haunting inflections
  • Circolumbia – this was listed as a Mystery Surprise and indeed it was. Performing amazing acrobatic stunts with singing and Drama/tension between the warring gangs made a hugely entertaining show that had everyone on their feet. Do perform with the energy they did in the middle of a hot and humid 35 degree today would have been exhausting
  • Dhafer Youssef – renowned for his Oud playing as well as his voice he didnt dissapoint.
  • Vieux Farka Touré – I felt he started off a bit slow but the pace picked up and I ended up hearing most of his set
  • Antibalas – Listened to these guys whilst having tea
  • Nidi d’Arac – Sparse stage but great night lighting for their set. So many photos of the Violinist whom I thought was key to their sound. Big thumbs up for this one
  • Compagnie Luc Amoros  “Blank Page” – I’d heard good reports from the Friday session so I went prepared to sit down and watch the whole show. Extremely clever and entertaining although a touch heavy at times, but that is their message. I’m not going to spoil it for anyone but if you havent already seen it get early , get a good seat and watch it on Monday evening – just WOW
  • Hugh Masekela – He might be gettiing old but he hasn’t lost it.  Top performance from this South African Trumpet player.

Nid d’Arac

Hugh Masekela

Womadelaide 2013 see the return of Swedish artist ” The Tallest man on Earth” who also played in Adelaide in 2011 as part of the Womadelaide Earth Festival held in Belair National Park. I loved his set he played then although one couldn’t avoid the discussion after the gig that he was very similar style to Bob Dylan. I’ll let you decide with this small snippet from the show.

He can be Seen in Botanic park at Womadelaide 2013 on the Friday evening

Well the Adelaide Zombie walk has been and gone. Its one event Ive been Photographing since 2008 so it’s my 5th outing but this time I took a fair bit of video with my DSLR as well as still photography. I was also fortunate enough to be invited to the “Official” Photographers group.

You would be surprised  how much preperation goes into photographing the event and even more suprised by the amount of time spent after the walk has finished. For those that aren’t real Zombies you just remove your Zombie outfits, wipe off the makeup and you move on. For people taking photos and even more so for those taking videos, there are many days, weeks ahead going through footage and video and getting it all together.

So first up are the Photos which I managed to get online within about 24 hrs of the walk > Link HERE for the full gallery

Dont forget that unwatermarked digital  images facebook size or suitable for small 4×6 prints are available for the low price of $12 with 20% proceeds going to Foodbank. Larger sized prints are available at varying prices

Amanda Palmer is an interesting person. Most of the Public either seem to  1) Love her work  or 2) Never heard of  her.

The Tickets to the Dresden Dolls surged as the show approached so I was too late to catch the main show, but Amanda Palmer seems to make quite a habit in Adelaide of Playing Free Ninja Shows. So I checked her website on the day prior to her Adelaide show and sure enough there was a Ninja show in the Early Afternoon at the New Tuxedo Cats.

The show was scheduled for 3pm so I got down there about 2:30pm and there was already a line out to Gawler Place. The Doors opened just before 3 and people shuffled in. The venue is still very much a work in progress with construction going on all around. The stage for the show was apparently just assembled a few days earlier. The lighting was sparse amd the backdrop a Reddish curtain.

Amandas show are hard to explain so probably the Video and some photos might make it clearer

Warning : Some language and Adult themes in her Music

Womadelaide 2012

Posted: November 22, 2011 in Adelaide Events

Keep those calendars free if you plan to be in Adelaide from Friday 09 March  ->  Monday 12 March as Womadelaide returns to Botanic Park for its 20th Anniversary. Despite the announcement a few months back of  Youssou N’Dour performing in 2012 and subsequent cancellation due to the elections in Senegal there is still a cracker lineup. Full details of who is playing HERE.

One of the artists that I’ve seen at a previous Womadelaide that blew me away is Tinariwen so extremely happy that they are returning to Adelaide. Like always there are other notable acts I’ve heard on CD previously but never seen performing live like Lo’Jo and the Master Drummers of Burundi. Then there are the oddball acts that you just dont know much about but can be real gems. The Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain is one of the oddities but reading their Bio I think the punters at Womad 2012 will be in for a treat

I’ll hopefully be there again with my cameras to capture some of the magic that is Womadelaide and it’s also great to see local Adelaide ISP Internode become a Major sponsor for the 2012 event. If you are an Internode Customer you will probably either have received or about to receive a special offer that is valid up until 5pm on November 25th for discounted tickets for either a 3day or 4 day pass – Be quick though

Only a Brief update today as I’m running late and need to head back for the final day so I’ll update this post tomorrow.

Got to the event on Saturday nice and early although I’ll have to say that one of the officials at the Belair Station bus pickup area wasn’t being overly helpful, advising the people waiting that he wouldn’t call for another bus until the next train came in  which was 25 mins away. This seemed ludicrous given there were already a handful of people there and more arriving by car and parking near the station all the time. Thankfully a Bus turned up soon after with the bus driver telling us he had been given a schedule but was ignoring it so that people could be picked up. I didn’t get the drivers name but BIG thumbs up to the City of Mitcham bus driver as he drove us to the earthstation entrance with what was almost a full bus ( only 3 seats left ).

Not enough time to do a full band writeup today but honourable mentions to  the Audreys and the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra but I have to say the absolute highlight of the festival so far was the performance by Zakir Hussain and the masters of percussion – absolutely breathtaking percussive rthymns. I’m going to take some extra cash today to pick up a CD. Another big plus to the last act of the night and really the only band I’ve seen that had everyone up on their feet and that was Mista Savona with their blend of Reggae and Ska. They started soon after 9pm on the Karka stage. I left at 10pm and they were cranking up the tempo.

Would have loved to stay but I was feeling pretty bushed after being there for 10 hours and needed to get home to go through the photos and replenish both the camera and my own batteries.

Photos of Saturday at Earthstation 2011

The first full day at Womad so a lot more packing in the morning including chairs and food. We arrived fairly early and caught the end of the Creole Choir of Cuba who were really good. I would have liked to have seen more of their performance. I then headed to see the Whitireia performing arts group and despite them only in part costume due to some delays in getting their gear to Adelaide they put on a great performance – marked these guys down to see again in a few days time. Company Ekart were still around with the Giant Chicken o I followed them around for a bit including a visit to the Police Caravan.

Onwards to stage One for Asa who put on a solid performance at the time of the day it was starting to get quite warm. I left before the end to catch the end of the Shaolin Afronauts who despite the name are a local Adelaide band I’ve heard of but never seen. They look like a band worth catching again in the future. 3pm saw the return to stage 2 for ScrapArt Music which is predominantly percussion made from Scrap steel. Great spirited performance and the instruments looked really good and quite unique.

17 Hippies were next on stage 1 and whilst there werent 17 of them it was an interesting mix of tunes.  Yasar Alpence HARAM’DE was next up who were musically very good, but not that great to photograph. Martha Wainwright was next and being a seated show meant that for the most part the photographers stayed pretty low also. With Martha wearing a shortish skirt she made a comment that the photographers were shooting up her dress. With the stage so high there is not a lot of options.

Headed down to stage 3 for Irish Singer Imelda May. She was great and one of my new found artists that I previously knew nothing about. Onto stage 1 next to see Fefe – WOW what energy they had. A definite highlight of the day with the lead singer going into the crowd during one the songs. This band had the crowd absolutely pumping. At 9pm I wound down seeing Leigh Warren and Dancers . It was a seated show but we were allowed to shoot from the front of stage which was the perfect height to rest the camera on the stage. Lighting started off fairly low and was difficult to shoot but got some great shots never the less. I caught the end of  Tanya Tagaq who had an unusual style of throat singing. I’m not sure I’d be rushing out and buying a recording but it was very different.

Final performance of the night was Amadou and Mariam. I had seen these two briefly during the media Launch but now they were on stage with the full band and dressed to impress and impress they did. Some great Rythmns were pumped out and a great way to end the first full day
