Aerial Footage now live

Posted: October 2, 2015 in Uncategorized

For a few years now Ive had R/C Helicopters but they have not really been suitable for capturing footage. The Quadcopters I looked at a few years back were OK at flight but lacking in the Video/Photography areas. Early in 2015 I had the chance to Fly the original Yuneec Q500. I was impressed with the stability, but the camera it came with was a bit lacking.

Fast forward 6 months and they have released the 4K camera version and here is some footage from that setup.

Had another commitment earlier in the night so missed the first few acts at Womadelaide for the first time in about 10 years. Caught a bit of CW stoneking in the way in. Sounded like a pretty solid set. Headed over to Sharon Van Etten on stage 3 for a short look then headed off to get a bite to eat. Rufus Wainwright on the main stage was not the sort of act that Photographer get excited about and to be honest I was looking for some more upbeat tempos to start off my Womad Weekend so headed over to the zoo stage to watch a bit of Gordie MacKeeman & his rhythm boys which fitted the bill and had the crowd dancing.

The highlight of the night though would have to be Soil and “pimp” sessions on stage 2. This group had everything, stage presence, great musicianship and lots of photo ops especially with the energetic sax player.

I did also catch about 15 minutes of Live Live cinema which was interesting. The movie was projected at the rear and all the dialog was done in ADR fashion Live as well as the foley ( sound effects /footsteps etc ) and the band on stage played the music accompaniment. I think to fully appreciate I would have had to watch from the start

Not long now until Womadelaide 2015 starts. This Iconic music festival runs from the night of Friday 6th to Monday 9th March 2015 at Botanic park – Adelaide. Its a great location to spend 3 days and 4 nights listening to some of the worlds best music, watching dance and just having a great time. Very family friendly with kids 12 and under FREE with a paying Adult. Full details and artists performing can be found on their website – WOMADELAIDE

When I heard that the Z ward at Glenside which was used to house the criminally insane it went straight into the calendar. Unfortunately the new owners ( Beach Energy ) were only going allow the public to see inside it for 3 hours prior to it being redeveloped at Office accommodation.

Turned out that a lot of people in Adelaide did want to see inside it and I think they underestimated the interest. We got there prior to the 9am opening and there was already a long line which just grew and grew meaning a lot of people who lined up wouldn’t have even got in given they had a 11:30 cut off for people entering. It’s a shame there wasn’t people on hand to explain some of the workings. Maybe no one knows  ?  The fact that this building as long as others earmarked for sale are being sold off is rather sad for our states history and I’m sure future generations will wonder why they were sold off for short term financial gain.

Would have also been great if they left a few rooms with Beds / tables etc as the whole area felt very neglected and abandoned.

I did get photos of some great Textures. You can see the Full gallery of images HERE

After some marathon edit sessions I present Zombie walk 2014 video. I tried to cram as many of the 13000 walkers in as I could so some bits had to be massively sped up.

Adelaide Zombie walk 2014

Posted: October 14, 2014 in Uncategorized

Ive been photographing the Adelaide Zombie walk since 2008 as well as Videoing part of the walk the last few years. This year as one of the Official Zombie walk shooters I decided just to do Video. Unfortunately the Camera I was going to use the 4k GH4 was still in for repair so I had to make do with a Canon 70D. Shooting video really is a lot more work both shooting and then editing but with the rest of the crew shooting stills it’s good to have someone concentrate on video.

The main problem I had with editing was the shear amount of footage given the huge size of the walk and many participants. Previous years I have ruthlessly edited and just left in footage of a handfull of walkers predominantly, but this year I wanted to add more footage of as many walkers as possible.

For starters I spoke to both the bands that played at the afterparty and agreed to use a song from each of them for the video. Favour the Braves track is used for the Prewalk footage and the Massix track for the walk video. Even then there was way too many minutes of walking time.

What to do ???

Decided to speed up much of the footage as we know Zombies walk slow. First up was double speed ( 200% ), b ut that still left a lot of footage that wouldn’t fit. I ended up speeding up a lot of the walking to 300% and even 400% with a mix of normal speed footage interspersed to break it up. Sorry if you get “Tired” from the frantic nature of some segments, but I wanted to get as many participants in as I could.

Hectic few months

Can’t believe its 5 months since my last post here. Have been busy shooting stuff with the GH4, most of which I havent got around to editing yet – apart from the Paid work which takes Precedence when hours are limited. Unfortunately though the GH4 is off at Panasonic getting a Replacement main board with the original one having issues with the HDMI port made especially annoying as they dont have the part they need in Australia and have it on backorder. Will be without the Camera fore almost a month…gggrrr. I know they are relatively new cameras ( released 5 months ago ) but they should hold stock of parts for repairs.
