Saturday morning the weather was looking a little unsettling. There was forecast of a possible mornign shower but I decided to chance it and lighten the load by leaving my rainjacket at home.

Headed down to Botanic park early, dropped the family off at the gate with the esky/sun shelter, food etc as I was expecting a BIG walk. To my amazement I managed to get a park less than 100 metres from the entrance on Hackney Rd.. WOW

Caught up with the rest of the family just inside the security gate and headed off to a spot behind Stage 1 to set up camp for the day. Now onto the entertainment

First up was Tony Allen on the main stage. Some great percussion ensued and then onto see Paprika Balkanicus who played a lively set that had the crowd up and dancing.

at 2.00pm I headed to the Zoo stage to see the only perfromance of Seckou Keita SKQ. We had the kids with us so we also headed off to catch some stuff in the Kidzone. The licorice Allsorts entertained as did the Amazing drumming monkeys. These guys have been doing exactly the same show for as long as I can remember but the kids and Adults still love it.

Mid afternoon and off for some pychedlic Cambodian Rock with Dengue Fever on Stage 3.   Back to the main stage at 4pm for Dan Sultan who was good but not awe inspiring.

Speed Caravan on Stage 2 at 5pm on the other hand was something else and had the crowd moving. I caught the first half of Geoffrey Gurrumui Yunupingu on stage 1 before heading off to grab a bite to eat before the evening entertainment started.

The Audreys graced Stage 2 at 7pm and put in a solid set, but myself and others Ive spoken to find it harder to get excited about Australian bands that tour quite often. 8pm at night and Dimi Mint Abba got onto the Main stage. An intersting mix of music and it was well received.

9pm and stage 2 had the Australian Dance theatre doing a performance which was a sit down affair for the crowd. Amazing Agility from the performers leaving the crowd mesmerised.

The main act on stage 1 for Saturday night didnt dissapoint with Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 pounding out some great Rhythm.

Another tiring long day full of enjoyable experiences for the ears and Eyes and back home to catch some sleep before the final day. Photos from Saturday up here

Well Womadelaide is over for another year.

First up let me give thanks to the weather gods who were smiling this year upon Adelaide.  Unlike last year of 42 degree days this year was a Nice and mild mid 20 degrees on all 3 days. A hint of some showers on Saturday morning never really eventuated.

Managed to get a away from work a bit early on Friday to get home pack the camera and head down for the official opening.  After the Aboriginal thanks for the use of their land and some dancing the first of the International Bands kicked off with the Bedouin Jerry Can band .

Next up I caught a rather “strange” collection of artists known as Aaron Choulai, VADA & the Tatana Village Choir. It was a mix of music from many cultures with a very Colourfull Choir wearing predominantly Red/Black costumes. The “Conductor” I guess is the most appropriate word maintained the Choir and played Piano as well.

Back onto the main stage I caught the opening few songs of Natacha Atlas. Whilst she is a renowned vocalist I couldn’t really get inspired as she sat down and sang. Maybe I didnt give it enough time but I left her perfomance and caught the end of the Andi and George band who had the Zoo stage pumping.

Back onto stage 2 for the Australian Dance theatre. These guys and ladies really did a fantastic routine that was pretty amazing to watch. They hurled their bodies around the stage wearing just the essential clothing to prevent being arrested for exposure. It was a sit down show for the audience but an amazing sight. I’d already decided to catch them again the next night.

The main band for the night was Ska Cubano who had a very energtic and Charismatic Front man who strutted around the stage and invoked the audience to sing and dance. The Backing band was great and a very solid performance.

The night was almost over but I decided to catch Sa Dingding from China. Amazing costumes and some haunting singing ( although a few people have indictaed to me that some of it was pretaped and they picked up some mimimg ? ).

That was Friday Night over and time to get home / upload the photos and prepare for the first FULL day at Womad. Photos from Friday up here

The Fringe Street parade and Opening night is a great place for taking photos and there were lots of Photographers out and about. I met up with a few near Rundle Mall about 5:30pm but quickly lost them in the crowd as we checked out the Pod stages on Rundle St. Photos from the Street Performers and Opening Parade

The Street parade started at about 8pm and there were plenty of colourfull floats and performers.

Next up was to check out the “Fire Organ” – WOW.. that was awesome and I intend on going back and checking it out again one night I was so impressed.

A quick visit to the Garden of Unearthly Delights for a quick feed and a beer and then headed off to the catch the last 2 acts of the Free Concert.

I got there for Fire Santa Rosa Fire and TZU. Both bands went off and I managed some great photos

First cab off the ranks is the Adelaide Fringe festival which kicks off with it’s street party Friday Night ( 27th February ). It’s going to be lots of fun for everyone who ventures into the city with “Pod stages” with a selection of Fringe artists performing as well as the Street party itself 8-8:45pm.

I’m expecting the Pyrophone Juggernaut to be pretty awesome as its described as

“a giant musical organ which spouts up to 15 meters of fire into the sky whilst it is being played by a crew of five performers.”

Certainly sounds impressive so look out for some photos of it in Action on the weekend. Later in the Evening is a Free for all Concert in Rymill Park featuring some local and Interstate bands – The Levitators, Fire Santa Rosa Fire and TZU ( From Melbourne ). It’s going to be an action packed evening with Great weather predicted also -> so head into Town and have fun.

Only 1 week to go Now for Womadelaide also so those who enjoy this annual Musical extravaganza from around the world dont have too many sleeps left. I have been fortunate this year to have again been granted Photography Access so expect to see photos in the Gallery each day. Most likely there will be a smaller gallery of Highlight photos from the Previous day with some more time spent going through them and processing the Images during the week post Womadelaide.

I’m off to clear some memory cards, Charge the batteries and prepare for the “silly month” of parties and events in Adelaide

Womadelaide 2008

Just over a month to go till the WOMADelaide festival hits Botanic Park in Adelaide.

WOMAD stands for World of Music, art and Dance and is currently held every year in Adelaides Majestic Botanic Park in the City Centre.  For me it is the highlight of the Music Festivals held in Australia, with friendly crowds, Great facilities and Musical experiences from All over the World.

I’m still going through this years line up and checking out their biographies and sampling their music from their myspace and online pages and some of the bands to get excited about are Sean Kuti & egypt 80, Rokia Traore, Ska Cubano, Neil Finn ( One of my favourite NZ songwriters/singers ) and the Cat empire who always stir up a storm with the crowd

The Full Lineup can be found here

During Womadelaide 2008 I had media accreditation and had galleries of photos from the days events posted up each night or the following morning. It was a Tiring but enjoyable experience capturing the essence of the Womadelaide performers. Check out for the 2008 photos for a sample of the performers Womad brings to Adelaide. Really hoping that I get granted accreditation again this year so that I can bring you the images from Womadelaide 2009

If you are a Fan of Music then Womadelaide is a must see annual event

If you live in Adelaide one thing that I think everyone knows is that Lance Armstrong ( 7 times Tour De France winner ) in in Adelaide and out of retirement to race in this years Tour Down under.  The Race itself runs for 6 days from Tuesday 20th Jan up till Sunday 25th January.

on Sunday 18th January a preliminary event was held with all the Riders competing which was a street circuit around Adelaides Rymil Park . The weather was fine/hot and the Crowds were Huge ( estimated by the media at 130,000 ).

Lance Armstrong ended up in the middle of the pack finishing around 60th, with Australian Robbie McEwen winning the event ( Cancer Council Classic ). The event was also aimed at promoting Cancer Awareness which is one of Lance Armstrongs passions given his own fight with Cancer.

Mid January update

Well the Christmas holidays are over, but it’s been pretty busy so far.

Having Adelaide Zoo Membership means frequent trips primarily to Adelaide zoo. We hadnt travelled down to Monarto Zoo ( about an hour out of Adelaide ) for about 4 months and we had a day with great weather so headed out of Adelaide.

Monarto is an open range zoo on a large expanse of land. There is a guided tour by Bus that takes you to see all the animals from the Bus, and then there is some options to stop off on a shuttle or walk to some of the viewing platforms. We saw some the New baby Girrafe that had been born there only a few weeks ago

We were especially intersted in getting to the African Painted dog / Lion viewing platform which only recently opened, so made sure we got there in time for the Feeding. The lions werent being Fed today unfortunately ( was their Off day ) but the African Hunting dogs were. Seeing a Pack of 40 of them running towards us when released from the other end of the paddock was a sight and sound experience.  One of the Alpha males had died a month or so back so the dogs were still fighting for domimance even though the food was plentiful

The End of 2008

Posted: January 12, 2009 in Uncategorized

Well since the last post it’s been hectic with the holiday silly season. I’ve been taking lots of photos but hadn’t been updating this blog.

Time to get back on track – First up I had a number of visits down to the city with my camera.

The first outing was to the “Stop the Clean Feed” protest. The Australian Government want to restrict “free speech”  and block/filter Internet access to certain sites that they deem to be offensive.
cleanfeed

I’m all up for protecting our kids from some of the objectionable material on the Internet but they way they are going about it is absurd and just won’t work. It will give parents a false sense of security.

Some photos from the protest can be found here

Whilst in Town I took in some street photography as well, primarily in the Rundle Mall area.

I headed back into town a week later to meet up with another photographer that hangs out on the OCAU forums early one Sunday morning and captured some images around the CBD

Rundle Mall Pre Christmas

2008 marks the 2nd year that the Guitar Festival is being held in Adelaide. I managed to get photography access to 2 shows for fasterlouder.com.au

Saturday night I caught a classcial Guitar concert featuring Slava and Leonard Gregoryan accompanying the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. We only had front of stage access for 5 minutes and it was a tough 5 minutes as the music they were playing was very quiet and delicate so the sound of a camera shutting opening broke through the silence like a Bomb going off. I ended up waiting for periods in the 5 minutes where the volume was a lot quiter with the string section firing up to cover the shutter sound.

There were 3 photographers present and we were allowed to continue to photograph from the rear of the festival theatre. Lucky I had my trusty 70-200mm F/2.8 with me

Wednesday night I was back at the festival theatre again for a performance called “bending the Blues”

First up on the bill was Fiona Boyes and her band. Hadn’t heard of Fiona before but it was a solid set of mainly original songs. Second up was the Backsliders who tonight had 3 members – Guitar , Drummer and Harp player. The Drummer is one of my favourite drummers from my younger days ( Rob Hirst from Midnight Oil ). The Backsliders played some pretty grungy Blues which I thoroughly enjoyed.

The highlight of the show was a set by Derek Trucks band. Derek is certainly not pretencious and most of his playing was back towards the rear of the stage and occasionally even out of the spotlight. He is a fine Slide guitar player though and really makes his guitar Sing. The band was very competitant also with Drummer, Bass and Percussion player from Fiji along with a vocalist and a keyboard player that also played the Flute for a few tracks

Classic Adelaide SundayHeaded down to Windy point today for the final Special stage of the Classic Adelaide car rally. Weather was fantastic and it was a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon

Shot in RAW for 90% of the day so those 4 gig memory cards filled up fairly quickly
